Importance of Tummy Time

As pediatricians we talk about tummy time ... CONSTANTLY. It is something that becomes critical with each stage of development, starting the day your infant is born. That's right, we recommend you start tummy time as soon as possible. It is easily the MOST important exercise your infant can do. Helps with head shape, muscle strength, coordination and helps lay a critical foundation for learning to roll, crawl and walk.

NEWBORNS In the newborn period. Skin to skin tummy time is an excellent way to start. Skin to skin actually works to relieve stress hormones, help regulate infant's sugar levels and temperature. These amazing benefits happen both on mom and dad's skin. Even with the umbilical cord, it is safe to place your infant on their belly on a flat surface while watching them at all times. Never walk away or let them sleep on their belly.

1-2 MONTHS This is the most critical time to help prevent head flattening. Make sure you are changing images to stimulate head lifting. For example, black and white images and mirrors are great motivators. Parents' voices are best of all. Take turns calling your infant on different sides of their body to help encourage them turning their head. By two months, your infant should be able to lift and turn their head both directions.

3-4 MONTHS This is when your infant is getting ready to roll! Tummy time is critical for them to gain that upper body and arm strength. Help your infant learn by putting a favorite toy just out of reach shoulder length. During Tummy time, slowly go through the stages of rolling over so your infant starts to learn. Don't forget to show both directions!

5-7 MONTHS Your infant is rolling and now getting ready to learn skills to prepare them for crawling and sitting. Put desired toys and objects just in front of them out of reach. Help place their knees under their hips so they can practice lifting their bottom. To help with abs, we recommend using devices such as the bumbo that can act as pillows/support when they topple over as you place them in the seated position to practice. We recommend placing a pillow behind them and fun toys right in front as they are seated.
